Tokyo City Legalizes Same Sex Marriage

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building No. 1 lit up in the rainbow flag pride flag LGBTQ colors to celebrate Tokyo City officially recognizing same sex marriage and partnerships as of November 1st.

While Tokyo now recognizes same-sex partnerships, the nation of Japan currently does not and the move does not confer any legal benefits of marriage beyond the issuance of a partnership certificate. Japan is currently the only G7 nation not to officially recognize gay marriage, civil unions and same sex partnerships.
